Tzompantli ( from the Nahuatl words tzontli (head) and pantli (row, string)) was a term used for the pre-hispanic altars with the rows of skulls (calaveras). In modern day Mexico, the items with skull-like details are frequently used around the Day of the Dead festivities (Día de Muertos).
